The long-awaited paving of South Main Street in Headland is inching closer to reality. The city council Tuesday approved a resolution for an agreement with the state for the job.

The resolution involves 1.403 miles of paving from the bridge at the south end of the street to King Street. Contracts are set to be let on Dec. 15, with $675,000 allocated for the work. The current four-lane street is scheduled to be narrowed to two for vehicle traffic, with outer walking/bicycle lanes taking up the remainder of the space. It has been an effort of Mayor Ray Marler since his election and he expressed pride Tuesday that its beginning of the project is finally here.
